Democracy and workers' rights are inseparable. The strength of our democratic institutions is deeply tied to the rights of workers. Attacks on one are attacks on both.

Standing for Democracy (SFD) is a coalition of labor unions, labor scholars, community organizations and individuals committed to defending democracy and workers’ rights in the face of growing anti-democratic forces. We believe that by combining the strength of working people, the knowledge of academia, and the power of community organizing, we can develop and implement strategies that will effectively resist and overcome these threats, whether they are in our country’s highest office or in our own workplaces.

Our mission is to serve as a strategy center where unions, educators, and activists collaborate to create innovative solutions that empower workers, protect democratic institutions, and foster resilient communities. Through education, resource development, and coordinated action, we aim to build a robust movement capable of confronting and defeating anti-democracy forces in our nation.

The political pendulum will not swing back on its own. We reject the notion that this is a temporary moment that will pass without our intervention. History has shown that anti-democratic forces thrive when met with silence and inaction. Whether that is in the ballot box or n our workplaces.

Grassroots organizing is our most powerful tool. Change comes from the ground up, and we must commit to building strong, resilient communities that can resist and overcome anti-democratic forces.

We must act now. This is not a future problem—it is happening now, and we must respond with urgency. The time to organize, educate, and mobilize is today.
